I have no particular preference or opinion about how to feed pets. Every animal is different in their eating habit. I believe keeping good health through good nutrition is always the most important thing.
As far as our pets are concerned, I know by experience that both our dog and cat won't stop eating food if we leave it out all day for them. I don't free-feed them for this reason. My husband always says that he can't free-feed our cat because the cat finishes the food in the bowl in minutes, and he keeps eating if we keep pouring food in the bowl. Our cat tends to over-eat. Many cats are known to nibble food a little bit at a time throughout the day, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be true for our cat.
One problem pet owners who free-feed their pets may encounter is difficulty monitoring how much their pets eat every day. It might be also a little harder to monitor their pets' appetite day by day.
What I've heard pet owners (who free-feed their pets) do is that they measure the amount of food first before pouring into the food bowls so that they can know in advance how much they feed their pets. It is a good idea to monitor the appetite and weight of your pets. If you free-feed your pets and are not sure how much you are feeding them every day, you might give it a try and measure the amount of food in advance.
