| Water Quality Does Count! | June 28, 2007 |
One evening, my husband and I noticed unusual behavior in our cat. We hadn't seen signs of cat litter being moist, which alarmed us. We were afraid that his urinary tract problems were coming back again.
The next morning, we called our veterinarian and immediately took our cat to her clinic. The vet, after she examined the cat's body, told us that everything seemed to be okay as far as she checked at that moment. She gave him a homeopathic remedy. Since we feed our cat holistic cat food, the vet reassured us that the diet was probably not the culprit.
As the conversation went on, our holistic veterinarian gave us an interesting story: One of her clients switched her cat to drinking distilled water, and her cat's urinary problems dramatically improved. The vet suspected that the tap water in this pet owner's area might have contained high volume of minerals.
After we heard this story, we began buying highly-filtered water, where large amounts of minerals and debris have been removed. Since then, we've given our cat (and dog) only this water. Everything seems to be all right. Certainly, we are hoping he won't have more problems in the future.
Although most water may look the same to us if it's clear, the quality of the water can certainly still have an impact on our lives -- and the lives of our pets -- who have smaller bodies than we do.
p.s. - Many entwined factors can lead to cats' urinary tract problems. If you notice anything unusual in your cat's behaviors, please take him/her to your veterinarian immediately for further evaluation. Problems related to cats' urinary tract can be potentially critical, and no time should be wasted.
