10 Things You Need to Know About Rottweilers

Want to know more about Rottweilers? Here are some quick facts!

1. Rottweilers are an ancient breed

Being an ancient breed means that they've been around for a long time. Back when they were still used as herding dogs in Europe and then becoming transportation dogs, and later, as security dogs. They were bred to work and protect. AKC classifies Rottweilers as "Working" while UKC classifies this dog breed as "Guardian" dog.

2. They were almost extinct

When people started to move on to a more advanced society, these working dogs were no longer bred as much. They weren't meant to be house pets in the first place. Thus, they almost became extinct.

3. They were later overbred

Because they were about to go extinct, dedicated breeders, thankfully, bred them. This project resulted to overbreeding of Rotties for the past 10 years. Because of this, they are more prone to diseases such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, osteosarcoma, bloat, and allergies.

4. They will eat anything

That's right. Rottweilers will eat everything you feed them. They will even eat what you don't feed them like your cables, wires, tubes- you name it! This breed is known to have a strong tendency to be obese.

While fat Rotties are adorable, they are unhealthy. A good owner must make sure that the Rottweiler stays fit with exercise and proper diet. The diseases above could be countered by making sure that the Rottie stays within the normal weight range.

5. They only come in black and tan

All Rottweilers, generally, have the same markings. They have a black coat with tan markings on their chest, paws, eyebrows, and mouth. Their lips are, however, black.

6. They actually have a double coat

Their fur is short but don't mistake this breed as easy to groom. It's actually a double coat. They shed a lot and fur that will be part of your everyday life if you get a Rottweiler.

7. Some cities do not allow them

These states have cities that ban Rottweilers:

  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Michigan
  • New Mexico
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Washington

If you live in one of these states and you plan to get a Rottweiler, check first if the place you live in allows the breed.

8. Some insurance companies won't cover owners with Rottweilers

Some insurance companies already blacklisted Rottweilers and will deny homeowners insurance if you keep one.

9. Rotties are classified as a dangerous breed

Rotties have a long list of recorded fatal attack cases. This is why they have a bad rep and are blacklisted by some cities and insurance companies.

10. But they are actually just misunderstood

Rottweilers are not for everyone. They are a strong breed. They were meant to be protectors. These aggressive Rotties were, sadly, not because of the Rotties themselves. It is because of people who want to own Rottweilers without trying to understand them. This is because of people who want to own the breed but are not willing to put in the work. If trained properly, Rottweilers can be the perfect, all-around family pet!

Rottweilers are loving, loyal dogs and are also the h most popular breed in the United States. Those facts are directly at odds with the false notion that Rottweilers turn on their owners. Surely if that were true, these dogs would not be such a popular breed!
